Only the pipes closest to the water heater make the knocking sound. It stops if I turn on the hot water in the bathroom.

If your system is experiencing water hammer, then your system either has air chambers that are full of water, or no air chambers at all. An air chamber is provided in order to allow the shock wave to be absorbed inside a piping system when the valves are closed quickly. If you can determine that you do have air chambers, then simply turn off the main valve to the house, and open all the faucets for a few minutes. This will allow air into the system. Once the water has stopped running, close all the faucets, and turn the water back on. If you don’t have air chambers, then you can purchase a device that can be installed. Check out this link: http://www.plumbingsupply.com/waterhammerarresters.html

Ultimately, I would like to calculate the amount of money wasted by not isulating the pipes. I know the diameter and length of the pipes, the initial temperature of the water in the pipes and the ambient temperature of the space through which the pipes pass.

I remember a rule of thumb that said the heat loss was a milliwatt per square centimetre per Celsius degree of temperature difference. Wonder how it compares with 2 BTU per square foot per Fahrenheit degree?

If you don’t insulate the pipes, and the heat escapes into the house, you will need either less central heating (good) or more air conditioning (bad). It depends where you live.

my house is 19 years old and this problem just started. When i turn on any water faucet i can hear the water pipes rattle in one particular spot. how do i stop or fix this?

By chance, is that "particular spot" near a toilet? You may have a fill valve that is going bad and when water is used (anywhere) the valve is sucking air and causing the vibration. You can test this by shutting off the supply valve under the toilet and then turn on a faucet. Just an experienced guess though.

I always hear on the news that in order to keep your water pipes from exploding or cracking open in the winter, its best to let them drip so the water is constantly flowing. Is that really necessary or not? I have only done this once and my pipes have never exploded or cracked open to my knowledge. But I can’t see my pipes under the ground to actually know if they are leaking or not.

Explode, no. Split (burst), sure. And then there is a lot of flow when they melt.

Only if pipes are subject directly to sub-freezing temperatures do they need to run (drip) all the time. If your pipes run through a conditioned (heated) space, they won’t freeze. If they are below the frost line underground, they won’t freeze either. And if they have not frozen in the past, they should not freeze now _unless_ there are acute and unusual and extremely low temperatures.

If you did have an underground leak you would know it pretty much right away. There would be water bubbling to the surface and your inside pressure would be low.

I need to come up the wood subfloor to a clawfoot tub with two new water pipes…hot and cold. How do you secure the pipes underneath the house to hold them up and keep them from sise to side movement so the plumbing to the faucet from above can be installed?

attach straps at opposite angles under the home , to the excisting floor joists this will make them very strong . also caulk in the joint at the sub/ finish floor . and being attached to the unmovable tub will make them very strong .
paint them prior to install with some silver paint or go all out and get chrome sleeves to make them very fancy ,,,,,,,,remember your going to look at them for a very very long time .

I want to move in to a warehouse that currently has very rudimentary plumbing – a toilet, a drain, and pipes for hot and cold water in the bathroom, and another set of hot and cold pipes with a drain where a kitchen could be. Is it possible to use just these two sets of pipes to install sinks, a bathtub/shower, a dishwasher, and a washing machine? Is there a limit to how many different things you can do with one set of pipes? Do I need access to underneath the floor?

if you plan on only running a max of 2 of these appliances at a time, then I would way you are ok to just use those same water pipes. If you plan on using more than that, it would be a good idea to install new pipes to evade a loss of water pressure when running the appliances. Hope this helps!
