What are PVC pipe fittings with black gaskets used for?

Can 3" and 4" fittings with black gaskets be used for sewer pipe? Or are they intended for something else? These appear to be Schedule 40. Would the gaskets interfere with gluing the pipe to the fittings?

Often pipes that normally run rain water, and are used for french drains, will have a gasket internally in the hub of the fitting. Depending on your local codes these types of fittings possibly could be used for a sewer main line that is buried, but normally I would think not. Some local codes may accept sch 40 glued fittings only, while others are OK with sdr35, which is thinner. Every area of the country is different and every county has different codes. To know for sure ask them at your local plumbing supply house, or contact your local building dept.
And no glue is usually used if these have internal gaskets.

Electric shower advice needed?

I’m looking for advice on what type of electric shower to buy. At the moment my current shower just works off the mixer tap on the bath and is fed from my water tank in my loft directly above my bathroom, the water tank is heated electrically (i only have electric heating). Is this what you call a gravity fed system? Can this type of system have a power shower fitted to it?

I preferably would like a shower that gives me really good water pressure as well as a good constant temperature – is it better to buy a higher wattage one for that?

Can anyone recommend any specific models you have used or installed that gives the results I’m looking for?
Stevo – i dont want to install an electric showerhead i wnat to install an electric shower system, preferably a power/pumped electric shower and what i was asking was if they could be plumbed to my type of system as i know they can only be plumbed to certain types of systems. And I live in Scotland and we have soft water here so I dont have the problem of calcium or limescale build up.

An electric shower runs direct from the cold water main and electrically heats the cold water as you use it.

Things to bear in mind with an electric shower is that to get the best flow rates you need a high wattage shower > 10kw.

As your current shower is a mixer shower fed from your tank in your loft you will need to have a new mains water supply plumbed to the shower and you will also need to have a 10mm Sq heavy duty electricity cable installed with an isolating switch near to the shower.

Needless to say installing a 10mm sq mains cable into a wall is a messy job and will probably require some redecoration afterwards.

The other problem that faces some people installing this kind of shower is that it needs to be connected to its own circuit protected by a 40AMP circuit breaker at your fuse board. If your fuse board doesn’t have a spare slot for the circuit breaker then you may have to upgrade this as well.

Power showers work on the same principle as your mixer shower, mixing preheated hot water and cold water feeds, but use an electric pump to increase the flow rate. Depending on how your tanks are setup and the capacities of your tanks, your system may not be suitable for a power shower, you really need to get this assessed by a decent plumber.

As the power shower is not heating the water it requires a lot less electical current and can be safely connected to the household ring main via a fused spur, meaning there is no requirement to install heavy duty cabling or add an extra circuit breaker to your fuse board.

However a power shower installed with inadequatley sized water tanks can literally empty your tanks in a couple of minutes.

In terms of brand of shower I would recommend you go for either Mira or Triton

Due to recent changes to regulations, electical installations must be performed by an electrician with the correct certicification or be checked for compliance by a representative from your local council at your expense.

Fire brigade visit due to burst pipe in attic

A pipe froze then burst in our attic whilst we were away for Christmas. Our neighbour called the fire brigade after hearing the water gushing through the house. This is a video collection of their visit from a webcam installed on the front door.

After attempting to fix the problem by turning the water off at the water mains in the street, they broke in through a bedroom window at the back of the house. They can be seen inside the house at around the 18:08 mark. The video ends when they cut the electricity mains.

They were originally called at 17:39 and by 18:15 had cut the water and electricity mains, stopping the leak and making it safe to enter.

Shame the webcam is next to useless in darkness.

Plumbing in a new bathroom suite and electric shower?

Anyone have any ideas how much it is likely to cost me to get a plumber to plumb in a new bathroom suite and electric shower (will just be replacing like for like)? Also how long is this likely to take? Should it be possible to do in a day?

Somewhere around £450, may be more because very often now plumbers will not do electrics. Therefore you may have to fork out for two tradesmen. I should think 2 days will do it. You do not have to be a qualified electrician to fit items but they must be installed to regulations. I have just refurbished my bathroom completely and the electric items came stating that you do not have to be an electrician.

How can I increase my hot water presure at the shower end without using an electric pressure pump?

I would like to have an increased pressure from the hot water @ the shower end, but I do not want to use any electric showers or any other electrically operated pumps. Is this possible, if Yes How?

A water-saving shower head will make it FEEL like the pressure has increased, because you’re forcing the water through a smaller opening—this will also save the environment, and your money (less water and water heating bills).

IF your problem is actually that you get a sudden drop in pressure when someone flushes the toilet, that can be solved with a pressure-balancing faucet like the Moen Moentrol or Positemp.

It is probably unlikely that your house PSI is low (it is more likely to be too high). Hoffmeyer is right about measuring the pressure & adjusting it, though I would suggest 50PSI. Note in the article below that some homes have two separate feeds – one for inside the house and one for outside the house. The outside one can have much higher pressure.
Copper pipe can easily handle over 100PSI—but your house taps and other fixtures are likely designed for 50PSI.

You can get a hose adapter for faucets that lets you use the hose pressure gauge to measure the pressure at any faucet in the house.
The pressure at the tap in the bathroom should be identical to the shower.
