what temperature water should you run to keep pipes from bursting?

I have an older home, and were we are its extremely cold. I have water running in the kitchen sink, tub and bathroom sink, I always thought you would just run cold water? Then i heard some guy say hot water? does it matter? Also the kitchen, bathroom are on the south side of the house, so i didnt know if i need water running at all faucets, i have small water running, I also have the cupboards open where the pipe runs to the kitchen to help air flow? my main concern was does the temperature of the water matter? i noticed i have no hot water in the bathroom sink, but i have cold water, i have hot water in the tub, so not sure whats going on there?
i forgot to say, i have no basement

First off the thought was that running water does not freeze as easily as still water. Water will still freeze if it is cold enough-even in the creeks.
Secondly, why they are saying hot water is that in plumbing, the hot and cold pipe could be(not always) are running close together and hot water(which comes heated from the tank) will impart the heat in the same cavity as the cold water(if that pipe is there). That is the thought. It does drain your tank which has to keep reheating more and more water.
The difference between the bathroom sink and the tub would be in the plumbing(or that the hot water to the sink has frozen.

What to do. Having the cupboard open to room temp is the right thing to do. Check in the basement (how cold it is) and for exposed pipes. Those pipes will be that cold.

Pay attention. If the pipes are on the outer walls of the house – where the insulation is suppose to be THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. It has its butt in the frost 24/7(just like a refridgerator).
Modern homes (the 50’s on at least) have the plumbing on the inside walls or no closer that6" to the inside of the outer(insulated) wall. And the water tank is in the middle of the home.

You have to expose the pipes from the inside walls and get the room air to contact them. Also you need glass or syrofoam insulation behind them. Hope none have already broken(which means you would have to tear the wall apart anyways). Do a retrofit in the spring.

Now I know you are asking, why was it built this way? Maybe cause initially they had a well? And pipes were added later for running water.

How do I get my bathroom floor ready for self adhesive tiles?

I wanted to put some self-adhesive tile in my bathroom because some Nazi thought that it was cool for carpet to be in the bathroom. When I attempted to pull up the carpet to see what was under there, said Nazi had GLUED the carpet to the concrete. What do I need to do to prep my floor for a make-over?

4inch razor scraper from home depot an extra 10 blades and scrap like a nazi. Then get Ardex feather finish it comes in small 10 lb bags and float the floor. A thin layer will do to ensure contaiments are coveredand floor is level. Sand when dry to get rid of any lines and high spots. mark a strigh line on the floor in which to follow with the tiles and peel and stick like ahhh again a nazi.
Stand back admire knowing it was done right and will not slide later cause you prepped the floor right and have a brewski and a frankfuter!! Auf wierdersan.

How do I clean the bathroom really fast?

Alright, so I have been out of town for a while, and my little cousin has been using my bathroom…ew. My other cousin is coming in from California tomorrow, and I haven’t seen him since I was three. Both my bathroom and my room are a total mess and I need to get them cleaned pronto. Does anybody have any tips or tricks that would help me get the job done in as little time as possible?

After your shower use the wash cloth to wipe down the stall. Dry it with the bath towel (after YOU are dry). Next wipe down the mirror, sink, and toilet, in that order – less to most dirty. Dry each with the towel. Lastly scoop up the dust bunnies with the towel and throw the whole lot into the washer.
As for the bedroom, strip the bed and remake it. Put all dirty laundry into washing piles – white, lights, brights, and darks. Damp dust with a lightly moistened pillow case from the bed. Take the laundry out to the washer and continue to wash. Lastly, run the vacuum.
This should take you about an hour – more or less.
Pour yourself a glass of wine.

How much would it cost to install a bathroom in a house?

I currently own a 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house and want to install another bathroom. I am planning on adding on to the house. Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost for plumbing, building materials for the new room, bathroom essentials (toilet, shower, sink etc.) and labor cost? If I forgot anything let me know!!! Thanks.

I had to replace my bathroom last year — had to tear it out down to the ground, and it was $7000. Kitchens and bathrooms are the two most expensive rooms to do. If you have a Home Improvement store in your area, they, sometimes have a list of people who are working in the area — as those folks have to buy their supplies someplace.

How many bathroom breaks do they have in middle school?

I will be going to middle school next year ( it’s a Catholic school) and I would like to know how many bathroom breaks they have. My friend said she’s scared and might wet her pants in middle school next year. Please reply. Thank you.

I hate middle school bathrooms, they’re always so nasty. you usually would get 3 minutes in between periods or ask to go to the bathroom while your in class. but what girl can go to the bathroom in 3 minutes anway?

what kind of paint is best for a bathroom ceiling?

I am painting our bathroom of our 70 year old house and need a paint that will cover some flaws yet still be highly resistant to water and humidity. I would like to use the same paint on the ceiling and upper walls in the shower that I use on the rest of the bathroom ceiling. Also, any tips on minimizing the mess and the drips would be highly appreciated. (The rest of the bathroom is not being repainted).

Thanks!

Mark, we have a 60 year old house. Be sure to patch any holes or cracks and use a gloss or semi-gloss because they are tougher, seal better, are less porous, and more "scrub-able." To minimize the mess use one of those 1 coat rollers with a splatter shield or a pad. I like to use a pad myself . . . . it is just a 4×6 pad (found in the paint section) that you can get in a variety of textures (like rollers) and there is less splatter than a typical roller.

Another thought is to install an exhaust fan that really cuts down on moisture after showers. My hubby even put our fan on a timer switch so we don’t have to remember to switch it off. Definitely saves on the energy with 4 teens. It has helped maintain our paint and reduce mildew immeasurably.

How can i stop my bathroom extractor from leaking water in winter?

Every winter our bathroom extractor drips dirty water in the bathroom, it’s no small amount either, i’m aware it’s condensation from the connected pipe in the loft but not sure how to fix it, any ideas boys and girls?
The water/electric combination is a little worrying.

I’d suggest going to the hardware store and buying a heat tape. It’s an electrical heater that’s used to wrap around pipes to keep them from freezing. It should do the trick.

Is it normal to cover bathroom tile with a paint like substance?

i jusnoticed that my landlord has certain spots in the bathroom covered with a white paint like substance. Under the shower handle, she has a thick white guey like substance as if she was trying to cover something dark. The bottom of my bathroom tub is also rusted. Is this acceptable? And for what other reason could she be covering tile with paint other than to cover up mold? How do I know for sure? Thanks.

Sounds like an El Cheapo landlord. Use a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab on the title to detect mold. Also, you can call your local department of health and safety to discuss if the rusted tub is a safety code or federal violation against the landlord, and what potential actions that you can take.

I’m putting a bathroom in the basement. Can I have the main electrical panel (circuit breakers) in it?

Let me clarify-

I am finishing my basement and drawing up plans. I plan to get it permitted. Unfortunately, the only place a bathroom would work happens to be in the area of the main electrical panel. If I enclose it in a closet accessible from outside the bathroom, it makes the bathroom too small. Is it possible to have the electric panel in the bathroom in an enclosed cabinet of some sort? (The bathroom will have a shower, so I don’t know if moisture will be a problem).

Suggestions would be much appreciated.

My county adheres to the national building code, 2003 edition.

No, service disconnecting means (panels) shall not be installed in bathrooms.
