Most states will require you to enter into an apprentice program and work under a licensed plumber for a certain number of years. Then, you have to pass a test to receive your own license.

Licensed by the state, involves taking an exam and having a certain amount of time as an apprentice. My nephew is working in an apprenticeship in Colorado, will take three years.
