I am trying to replace the lever completely because the handle broke off. But, the nut is either really old and has soften or is some kind of plastic and wax mixture. I tried to use the wrench to remove the nut but try as I might, the nut’s side keeps stripping. I fear it has stripped too much. Any ideas or solutions?

after I watch this …
after I watch this i went and practice on one of my toilets in my house. only took me around 10mins. My toilet didnt have a chain assembly but a notch to put the tank lever in.
